Chubby Theater Unicorn
As I kid I loved entertaining. I thought I was funny, I loved making people laugh, I used humor to overcome a lot of insecurities and to “make people like me.” I was a little turd, but I could make you laugh.
I always wanted to be an actress. I was enthralled by Hollywood and collected every Teen Beat and Sixteen magazine I could. I wanted to be Kelly Kapowski or DJ Tanner. I wanted to live the life of luxury in the Hollywood hills and be a super star.
That was until I realized that I wasn’t the body type Saved by the Bell, Growing Pains, or when I was a little older 90210 or Melrose Place was looking for.
I went to college as a theater major because I loved acting. And I loved being around creative nerds who didn’t care what society thought of them. (Or so I thought...) But I wasn’t (or didn’t think I was) skinny enough or sexy enough for lead roles. I held back because I thought I wasn’t enough. I even took an acting class where the instructor told me I could never be a lead woman because I didn’t look the part but that he saw me more like a George Costanza (what the actual F!).
I have always been a performer at heart. And I’ve never technically given up on those dreams, they have just shifted slightly here and there. But I LOVE seeing the change in the way the entertainment industry is becoming more and more acceptant. We have a LONG way to go, but it is becoming more inclusive. And I’m not talking just about chubby little unicorns like I was. I’m talking all nationalities, body types, facial structures, noses, toes, heights.... etc. All inclusive!
Who knows... maybe someday I’ll be able to be in the spot light and be able to highlight projects like @beautifulstrength_org surrounded by men and women of all types. And it will be one hell of a day!
Be you... no matter what. And encourage those around you to live out their dreams. Be someone who supports diversity doesn’t bad mouth someone because they don’t look like what we’ve been trained is the norm.
Walk around real life every once in a while and see that there is beauty and talent in all shapes and sizes. 🖤🖤
